I Trust You
Don’t know about you, but I have a real "love-hate" relationship with reminders.
Believe me, I appreciate their value!
I am - like most, I'm told - an "out-of-sight, out-of-mind" kinda guy.
Reminders, therefore, can be a blessing, and sometimes a necessity, no matter their form.
Be they digital, analog, lists, prompts, alarms, or any myriad of "other" - I appreciate a nudge in the right direction as much as the next person.
But…
There is a part of our reminder culture that borderline irritates me (I say ‘borderline’ because I tend to go hard on the whole ‘grace and mercy’ thing…).
What, pray tell, is on Ken's very limited naughty list?
Reminders that others place on top of my own (assuming I don't have the responsibility or agency to create reminders in a system that I know works for me).
Others expecting me to remind them (when I don't know their preferred reminder system or calendar priorities).
Let’s face it. Business is busy-ness. We all have a LOT going on.
But, we are also adult professionals that 1) know how to put things on our own calendars, and 2) have agency that allows us to prioritize the intense competition for our limited availability.
Does your leadership culture promote ownership and agency when it comes to calendars and meeting attendance?
Or…are meeting confirmation reminders normalized and expected?
Do you have people missing meetings or showing up late if a reminder is not sent??
Though it may be to my own detriment, I choose to trust the professionalism and discipline of the people I meet and work with.
It is on my calendar. I trust it is on yours, too.
I'll see you then and there - whenever and wherever then and there may be.
No reminder is needed in either direction. I look forward to our conversation.
I trust you.
Blessings to you, my friends!
