Step Into the Circle
The difference between those who watch leadership happen and those who make it happen is one simple act: a willingness to step into the circle.
At this year’s Global Leadership Summit, Bradley Rapier invited us into the powerful metaphor of “the circle” drawn from hip-hop street dance culture.
Picture it: a DJ dropping tracks, a team of dancers forming a circle, and one by one, individuals daring to step forward – improvising, creating, and putting themselves on display.
Rapier recalled one of his earliest experiences. He walked up to the circle…but couldn’t step in.
Fear. Intimidation. Self-doubt. The very barriers that hold back not just dancers, but leaders as well.
That’s the tension leaders live in.
When you step into the circle, you’re seen. You’re vulnerable. Your skills and abilities are tested. And yes, others will judge.
But here’s the truth. If you want to move the needle, steward your gifts well, and truly lead, you must overcome those obstacles.
You have to step into the circle.
It won’t be perfect. Mistakes will happen. Criticism will come. But stepping in is the only way to grow. It’s the only way to find your groove, to sharpen your presence, and to make a difference.
This is one of the (many) reasons I love my work. I get to step into the circle alongside seasoned leaders who have danced there for years and watch them invite future leaders from their spheres of influence to do the same.
That’s the beauty of leadership: inherent risk and vulnerability are rewarded – they become the pathway to growth and legacy.
Leadership is visibility. It’s sacrifice. It’s skill development, awareness, courage, and vulnerability.
And while it will always feel risky, it becomes just a little easier when you show up ready, embrace the moment, and “find your groove.”
So when the opportunity presents itself, step in. Bring your A-game. Love. Serve. Make a difference. Move the needle.
