PTO Is Not The Problem

Vacations aren’t an interruption to healthy organizational life. They are one of the realities healthy organizations must be designed to accommodate.

Every summer, the same tension appears.

Families plan trips, school calendars and weather create narrow windows, and employees look forward to rest, renewal, and experiences that matter deeply to them.

On the flip side, the work never goes away.

Customers still need to be served. Production targets still need to be met. Decisions still need to be made. Deadlines do not automatically move because several key people chose the same week to leave town.

That creates a legitimate leadership challenge.

A Secret Longing

Every leader eventually discovers the same thing about the people in their organization. Employees want more than a paycheck.

Yes, compensation, benefits, flexibility, and a myriad of other employment factors matter. But beneath all of them is something much deeper.

People want their work to matter. They want to be trusted. They want opportunities to grow. They want their voice to count. They want meaningful responsibility, not just assigned tasks.

In short, they want freedom.

Pull Over

Every organization has its systems.

Systems for hiring, budgeting, production, quality, customer service, and more.

But do you have systems for humanity?

Every Revolution Needs a Champion

Every significant organizational movement eventually needs a champion.

Years ago, I watched a leadership transition that changed how I think about organizational influence.

The role was not described merely as a director, manager, or executive. The role was described as “Champion.”

At first, I thought the distinction was mostly semantic, but I was wrong. A director directs, a manager manages, and an expert advises.

But a champion creates movement.

The Humanity

There is never a convenient time for tragedy.

The diagnosis does not wait until the strategic plan is complete. The funeral does not consult your ideal week. The family crisis does not arrive after the busy season.

Life happens when life happens. And leadership happens at the same time.

The Dunbar Principle

Every leader eventually discovers this painful truth: The very leadership style that helped create success often becomes the thing that limits future growth.

Early in my executive coaching career, I spent a significant amount of time working with Senior Pastors and their leadership teams to develop healthy cultures and organizational structures that could eventually become fertile ground for ministry growth.

One of the most fascinating discoveries during that season was something called The Dunbar Principle – more commonly known today as Dunbar's Number.

Leadership is Not a Vote

Leadership by committee sounds wise until the future demands courage.

The Promised Land was visible. The opportunity was real. The abundance was undeniable.

Even so, an entire generation walked away from it because the majority report carried more weight than God's promise.

Breaking Inertia

Beware recency bias – societal emphasis is always shifting.

Last week I read an insightful post about the declining emphasis on “The 5 AM Club” and its related life-hack cronies. In the author’s opinion, the trendlines are shifting away from hyper-discipline culture.

The argument was thoughtful and fair. We went through a phase where intensity, grind, and optimization became badges of honor.

Thankfully, many people are now rediscovering the importance of sustainability, balance, and healthy rhythms.

I agree with the move. For the most part. Except for one pesky little reality…

A Long Obedience

The older I get, the more convinced I become that gratitude and ambition must learn to coexist…or one will eventually poison the other.

We turn 30 this year!

Conduits

Some leaders spend their entire lives acting like generators when they were only ever designed to be conduits. God never asked leaders to manufacture power. He asked them to steward what he already released into creation.

“Energy cannot be created or destroyed; it can only be transferred or transformed.” - The First Law of Thermodynamics has had me thinking lately.
